Updated 08-29-10

Way, way back in 2008, I was one of the many nameless people laid off as a casualty the greatest depression since the stock market crash of 1929. I had always dreamed of owning my own company and this was the perfect opportunity to make that start. Urban MINI officially opened it's doors in the spring of 2009 and has since grown to a very nicely-sized small business thanks to a very dedicated group of MINI enthusiasts. I've even sent product all over the world, from Germany to England to Israel, if that gives you any idea of the reach of the MINI-addicted! Well, enough preamble.

Urban MINI is now at a point where it needs to grow even more. Hand-fabricating speaker enclosures out of wood was a great way to start the business, but it really doesn't work for large-scale operations!

As of today, we will be canceling all our wood construction projects and concentrating on scaling the business up. We will be taking about a month or so off from manufacturing to re-design and re-tool so we can bring a much better product to market starting in July. Call it a 40th birthday present to myself! :)

In the mean time, we will continue to sell our speaker adapters, which we have plenty of in-stock! Feel free to continue ordering those on the website like you normally would.

Expect to see brand-new subwoofer boxes for the R56 Coupe, the R55 Clubman, and yes, even the R57 Cabrio (the new tooling should allow for this). We will even be debuting a few new products as well!!! These are very exciting times for us, feel free to email me if you want!

Thanks everybody!   James@urbanmini.com

  1. 1.I’m now back from my big 40th b-day extravaganza in lovely Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!!! God, I need a vacation now ;)   Thanks for hanging in there and all the positive emails you’ve sent. - James

  1. 2.So when are you going to release the new stuff?!!  This seems to be the main question everyone’s asking right now (especially since we’re running late), so I figured I’d post another update of our progress so far. As you know, I’ve been redesigning and redoing the tooling ever since we dropped the wood fabrication altogether. It’s been time consuming, but major fun since I really like doing this sort of work. The only hiccup I’ve hit is with production. The new designs are all cast rotational moldings, but since the average subwoofer size is pretty big, it’s pushed the manufacturing costs through the roof. What I’ve ended up deciding is to build my own rotomolder and do the casting work myself. This will keep the costs to you down and allow me to control the fabrication times and build quality. The new website is finished and I’ve already sourced the parts for the molder and am waiting on the frame to be welded before I can start casting. As soon as the molder is done and the first sub cast, I will post the new site and start selling the new subs as well as some great installation accessories like amp kits, speaker adapters for all locations and multi function steering wheel adapters (which are all currently in stock!). I don’t have an ETA yet, but it will be ASAP!

UPDATE!
